One of the
first questions new folks (some
older chatters too) to the chat room experience is how to post (show)
pictures in the chat room. Maybe
this will help.
In
a nutshell in order to have a picture show in the chat room the picture must
have an URL. So what is this URL and how do pictures get it?
There are a few things one must know from the onset. First , URL stands
for Uniform Resource Locater.
It is a unique address assigned to any document or file that can be
located and seen on the World Wide Web (WWW). Just like
your home address it is assigned and no one else (site or picture in our case)
will have that same address. Most
people are familiar with what a URL looks like.
As an example; http://www.crazywater.org . Each URL has three
parts; the protocol , the host name and
the file path. The http identifies it as a Web page. Then reading from left to
right identifies the domain and any sub-domain. The picture you bring into the
chat room is a sub-domain. The
slashes are dividers necessary in the address.
This is the information necessary for a hypothetical post man
to deliver mail to the correct address. The URL in the chat room is
really just telling the others in the chat room where the picture is stored. The
chat room computer function, in a sense, goes to the storage address and opens
it so it will appear in the chat room. It
is important that the address is correct so all letters and punctuation marks must be error free.
If you use a comma in place of a period it is a wrong address.
If you use a capital letter instead of a lower case it is a wrong
address. The computer function has
to have the correct address for it to work.
The next
step is how your picture gets the
URL. In most case you have some
pictures stored in folders on your computer’s hard drive.
People question why they can not simply paste the picture from their hard
drive directly into the chat room. It
doesn’t have a proper address. It might look something like this: email
pictures. picture #1;( Folder name, picture name)
. No http and no www. It
would be like handing the hypothetical post man a picture which had only a
return address (a folder in your hard drive)
saying deliver it.
Will not work. Needs a URL (proper address).
The
most common method to get an URL is by having, what is generally called, an On
line picture storage depository. There are several both Free and fee sites.
Anyone in the chat room will help you find one.
The way the on line picture storage works is fairly
simple. Once you are in the
site there will be a link to upload pictures from your hard drive to the storage
site. When the picture is
successfully loaded unto the site it will automatically
have a URL. The URL will
consist of the WEB address plus the name of the picture (you name it) and the type format (jpg/gif).
Using the address above http://www.crazywater.org the URL for a picture
will look something like this; http://www.crazywater.org/images/Picts/HP.gif .
Notice the first part of the address is the same but added is-images/Picts/HP.gif.
It is important that ALL the URL is posted in the chat room without
errors.
Once the
picture has the URL assigned the final step is getting it in the chat room.
Simply go to the storage site and double
click on the picture you want.. The picture should open in a new window. The URL
for the picture will appear in the ADDRESS
BOX at the top of the screen just below the Menu line. (There are several
ways of doing this next step depending on the type browser you are using but to
keep it simple I will only going to explain a few).
If you can COPY and PASTE just copy and paste the URL in the picture box
or post box of the chat room. If
copy and paste are foreign to you, you can just TYPE out the URL in the box.
But again be careful not to make a typing error.
If the picture you want shows a RED X in the chat room it generally means
the URL is wrong. Carefully check
all the all letters and punctuation marks and
make corrections as required. Be
sure the http or www is not shown twice. IE
http://www.//http://wwwcrazywater.org.
This is a common error, .. Accuracy is the key.
